The Do’s And Don'ts Of Social Media Marketing

It’s no secret that the social media world is constantly changing. Trends are moving faster than ever, and content that lasts online for more than a few days is rare. So how in the world can social media marketers keep up?

That’s why I’m writing this blog! Let me introduce myself in case we haven’t met.

My name is Janna, and I’m a social media marketer + strategist who has been in the game since 2016. I geek out on marketing trends so you don’t have to. Keep reading for a few social media marketing do’s and don’ts that I always have in my arsenal.

Do track your analytics / Don’t spend too much time on vanity metrics

If you’re not documenting your analytics at the end of each week or month, you’re missing out on a key piece of social media marketing. Analytics provide us key insight into what’s working, what isn’t, and how we can improve our digital footprint.

Vanity metrics are the numbers that look good to the naked eye, but don’t actually give us any insight as to how our marketing is doing. A few examples of vanity metrics would be:

Impressions - This number is often the biggest on any given Instagram account, but this number only reflects the number of times your content has come across a person’s feed. It doesn’t measure interactions, conversion, or if they even read your content.

Page Views - It feels good to know a ton of people are looking at your site, but are those views converting? It’s important to always link page views to another key metric, such as purchase rate. Otherwise, it’s just another vanity metric.

Followers - I’m sad to say that followers are a vanity metric. Having a certain number of followers on any given platform is excellent, but unless that number is converting, or building community, it’s meaningless.

Make sure to track these numbers, but always link them to a metric that brings them above the vanity line!

Do spend time creating innovative content / Don’t get stuck in the ideation phase

I’ve seen this be the downfall of startups, and it breaks my heart every time it happens. They get into these big team meetings, start dreaming up marketing materials, and the ideas just start flying. The downfall? They spend all their time dreaming and never make it to the execution point. On a smaller scale, I’ve seen solopreneurs never get to the writing phase because they’re stuck in analysis paralysis. While it’s great to bounce ideas off of one another, and it’s even more important to sit down and ideate solo, make sure to not get stuck there!

Sometimes the easiest thing to do is just start writing. A lot of my favorite content pieces come from brain dumps in coffee shops!

Do invest in your marketing / Don’t spend more money than you’re ready for

Marketing is an important piece of every business! You should be investing time into your social media presence, website, emails, and more. Outsourcing is an exciting step, especially when you’re to the point where your marketing is too much to handle in-house.

The trap I see a lot of business owners falling into is spending too much too fast on their outsourcing. While it might be great to hire an agency to do it all, you have to make sure the price point is sustainable and makes sense for you!

That’s where I come in. Working with a private social media + marketing manager can be the next step in your outsourcing journey. You can get all that an agency can do, without the hefty price tag.
